Indigenous to the region of Georgia, Saperavi is an ancient red grape varietal that is believed to originate from the Kakheti region which has a history of producing wine dating back centuries.
Where most red grape varietals have red skin and clear pulp, Saperavi is a teinturier grape, one of the rare varietals with red skin as well as the pulp. Saperavi means “dye” or “paint” in Georgian, the deep purple colouring of the fruit also producing an intensely dark, inky wine.
High in acidity and tannins, Saperavi has great aging potential and is perfect to cellar. Flavour profile is often described as beetroot, blackberry, plum, earth, liquorice, chocolate and tobacco.
Best food match, rich, hearty casserole, steak or lamb.
